Google

The most important crawler based search engine may be Google. Many other search engines like Yahoo and AOL Search are powered by Google. The best way to raise your listing with Google is to have links to your web site from other sites, this is your "link popularity." If your site becomes listed on one or more major directory, Google will almost certainly include your site in their listings.

Keywords: weight and proximity matter most.
Location of Keywords: you can add <title> Keywords here, up to 90 characters, header tags (<h1>, <h2> etc.) function as keywords, as can bold text.
Meta Tags: Google has never recognized meta tags.
Themes: These can be used with consistency consistent keywords throughout the site.
Considered Spam: Use of link farms, cloaking, excessive repetition.

Aside from link building, Google provides an Add URL page that lets you submit your domain name directly to its crawler. There is no guarantee that Google will actually include a URL submitted in this way, however. Nonetheless, it makes send to submit your home page and perhaps one or two the URLs from inside your site via the Add URL page that they have at:

Fee Based Search Engine Listings:
Yahoo

Yahoo is the oldest directory on the web, launched in 1994. Yahoo made a giant shift to using the Google crawler-based listings in October, 2002, to organize web sites into categories. Yet, Yahoo is still worth using even though it is powered by Google because Yahoo enhances Google listings with information from its own directory. Also, Yahoo still offers Categories links that lead to a list of sites that have been reviewed and approved by a human editor. Yahoo also purchased the Inktomi search engine in April 2003, so Inktomi results may appear at Yahoo, and being listed in the Yahoo directory may help you get included and rank better in Google, which may in turn help you in Yahoo itself. You can view the Yahoo directory at: http://dir.yahoo.com. Yahoo has two submission options: Standard, which is free, and Yahoo Express with is fee-based. However, Yahoo does not accept Standard, free, submission for commercial sites.

Yahoo guarantees that within seven business days a member of the Yahoo editorial staff will look at your site and consider it for inclusion in the Yahoo directory. Payment does not automatically guarantee inclusion in the directory, site placement, or site commentary. Final judgement remains solely with Yahoo editors. Free for this service is $299.

You can see if you are listed on a Yahoo directory by going to Yahoo and enteringr your domanin name in the Search field, then, under the field that displays your URL, click on Directory. You domain name will appear in a directory if your are listed. If you are not, a message will appear that says – We did not find any Directory pages containing yourdomain.com - .

Inktomi is an important crawler-based search engine because it provides backup results to the popular MSN Search. It was also recently purchased y Yahoo, so it may be providing results to Yahoo in the near future. Since it is a crawler based engine, building links is the best way to get listed for free. However, Inktomi has no free Add URL page. However, if you have links pointing at your site, you may get included naturally. What if you are not picked up for free? submit via one of their partners. Inktomi pas a paid inclusion program that will guarantee to add the pages you submit within two days and continue to revisit it on a regular basis for a year.
