Open Directory Project
Getting Your Site Into Portals and Search Engines Using ODP Data (used by AOL and others)
If your site has been accepted into the Open Directory, it may take anywhere from 2 weeks to several months for your site to be listed on partner sites which use the Open Directory data, such as AOL Search, DirectHit, HotBot, Google, Lycos, Netscape Search, etc. We make updates of the data available weekly, but each partner has their own update schedule.

Fee Based Search Engine Listings:
Yahoo
Yahoo is the oldest directory on the web, launched in 1994. Yahoo made a giant shift to using the Google crawler-based listings in October, 2002, to organize web sites into categories. Yet, Yahoo is still worth using even though it is powered by Google because Yahoo enhances Google listings with information from its own directory. Also, Yahoo still offers Categories links that lead to a list of sites that have been reviewed and approved by a human editor. Yahoo also purchased the Inktomi search engine in April 2003, so Inktomi results may appear at Yahoo, and being listed in the Yahoo directory may help you get included and rank better in Google, which may in turn help you in Yahoo itself. You can view the Yahoo directory at: http://dir.yahoo.com. Yahoo has two submission options: Standard, which is free, and Yahoo Express with is fee-based. However, Yahoo does not accept Standard, free, submission for commercial sites.
